Cost-effective forest conservation and criteria for potential conservation targets: a Finnish case study

International audience; Selecting reserves for forest biodiversity maintenance is often done by setting criteria for components of structural elements of biodiversity, such as a volume of decaying wood. We tested how the different threshold values for the components of structural elements affect the cost-effective site selection. Using Finnish National Forest Inventory information and remote sensing data, we determined a habitat quality index and economic value for each site in Satakunta region in Finland. Optimal contract length for biodiversity conservation under conservation budget constraint

We examine the optimal length of a contract period in a conservation program with payments for ecosystem services aiming at protecting biodiversity on privately owned forests. The government chooses the number of stands and the length of contracts so as to maximize biodiversity benefits under a binding conservation budget. We examine the implication of two alternative budgets: a separate budget for each period (periodic budget) or one budget that to be used in all periods (intertemporal budget). Negative consequences of intensive forest management on biodiversity are often mitigated by setting aside old forest, but alternative strategies have been suggested. We have compared using simulations the consequences of two of these alternatives setting aside young forests or extending rotation periods - to that of current practice in managed boreal forest In all scenarios we applied a constant conservation budget and predicted forest development and harvesting over 200 years. Exact and Approximate Algorithms for Two–Criteria Topological Design Problem of WAN with Budget and Delay Constraints

This paper studies the problem of designing wide area networks (WAN). In the paper the two-criteria topology assignment problem with two constraints is considered. The goal is select flow routes, channel capacities and network topology in order to minimize the total average delay per packet and the leasing cost of channels subject to the budget constraint and delay constraint. The problem is NP-complete. Then, the branch and bound method is used to construct the exact algorithm. Also the approximate algorithm is presented. Some computational results are reported. Based on computational experiments, several properties of the considered problem are formulated.
